Pharmacist Job Market Information

According to the U.S. Department of Labor and Statistics, employment opportunities for pharmacists in the next decade are expected to be excellent. Approximately 269,000 pharmacists were employed in the United States in 2008. Of those, about 65% worked in retail settings while 22% worked in hospitals. Other pharmacists found employment with mail-order and internet pharmacies, doctors’ offices, the Federal Government, or with wholesalers.

Job Outlook

Pharmacy-related employment opportunities are expected to grow by 17% between 2008 and 2018, which is faster than the national average for other occupations. As the large Baby Boomer generation retires and continues to age, increasing numbers of people who use prescription drugs will fuel demand for additional pharmacists.

Job Prospects

Because the demand for pharmacists is currently high and growing, employment prospects for pharmacists are excellent. The U.S. Department of Labor and Statistics reports that employers across the nation are experiencing difficulty attracting and retaining pharmacists. The bureau also reports that a growing number of pharmacists are choosing to work part time instead of full time—a trend which is also fueling demand.

Earnings

According to the U.S. Department of Labor and Statistics, salaried pharmacists earned a median wage of $106,410 in 2008. The middle 50% of all employed pharmacists earned between $92,670 and $121,310 a year. The mean hourly wage was $51.27.
